Larry Paul Massey, age 64, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on November 16, 2022 at CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee from complications of diabetes. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by family and friends.
Our Larry was a tender-hearted sensitive man who was also a strong and proud US Marine. He deeply loved his wife of 25 years, Vonda Jones Massey, whom he cherished and protected with his life. Larry was her sole care-giver for many many years through her battle with kidney disease, including dialysis and a stroke. I know he considered it a privilege to take care of her. He truly honored their marriage vows in sickness and in health, until her death parted them.
In these last years Larry often wore overalls and enjoyed sitting on his porch with his dog, Doby, watching the wild birds eat from his bird feeders, and talking with anyone who came by and wanted to sit with him. He loved to eat and would eat most anything. Sweets, of course was his favorite! In the last couple years Larry started gardening and even grew a grapevine in his backyard which yielded a few grapes this year. Sadly he never got to see the beautiful clusters except in a picture. Larry was interested in many many things and was constantly pursuing learning about everything imaginable. He really liked computers and first pursued that interest on a Commodore 64 home computer. He enjoyed learning about guitar music, fishing, and all things medical. You might say Larry almost became an expert as a dialysis nurse for his wife. Because of his curiosity about so many things Larry could talk about anything with anyone, including the Bible. He had long telephone conversations with his sisters about God and heaven. He looked forward to seeing his Savior Jesus, face to face, as well as his wife and those who are already in heaven today. How wonderful it is to think about what Larry is learning and talking about now!
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Vonda, his parents, Ross & Velma Massey, brother Ross Massey, Jr. Larry is survived by sisters Jean Howell (Calvin), Shirley Pyles, Pamela Morris (Duane), and brother Danny Massey, as well as several nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.
The family would like to offer their sincere thanks to the staff of Life Care of Red Bank and the CHI Memorial 2 South nurses for the loving care provided to Larry during his last few months.
A service to honor Larry will be held Monday, November 28, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37404. Vonda (February 10,1959 - January 22, 2017) will also be honored and laid to rest with Larry.
