He served as a Sargent in the United States Marines, Second Division during World War II. He was on the first wave of the invasion of Tarawa where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. Kenneth then was in the invasion of Saipan, and Tinian, where he received the Gold Star for the Purple Heart for receiving wounds in the battles. He was a Baptist Deacon and attended Spring Creek Church of God. Kenneth was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #43, and a member of the Chattanooga Masonic Lodge # 199 F&AM.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Lena Kelley Johnson; grandsons, Bryan Johnson, Jonathan Frazier, and William Johnson.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Lou Johnson; two sons, Kennith K. (Jane) Johnson, Jr., and Roger D. (Kim) Johnson; daughter, Susan E. (Terry) Frazier; four grandchildren, Shawn (Laura) Frazier, Darren (Jennifer) Johnson, Justin (Courtney) Walker, and Stephanie (Scott) Woodby; five great grandchildren, Brianna Grace Frazier, Lindsey Drew Frazier, Addison Woodby, Aiden Woodby, and McKenna Walker; sisters, Barbara Brown, Oletta Williams, Betty Sue Campbell, and Izetta Lawrence; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Sunday, September 11, and 5 to 7 pm on Monday, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service for Kenneth will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday, at the North Chapel with Reverend Bennie Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
