On December 14th, God, the Author of Life and Composer of Hope spoke Jo’s name and called her home. At 102 years old, it was the end of her journey on earth, but the beginning of eternal life and a moment she looked forward to. Born in Knoxville Tennessee to Dr. J. Marshall Lea and May Sentelle Lea, Jo attended Salem College and graduated from the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Jo loved the stage. She was an accomplished soloist featured in theater productions and later in church choirs.
In 1938 she married Harry H. Wilkerson. They settled in Chattanooga and raised 3 children, Robert Wilkerson (Carolyn) of Lookout Mountain, William Wilkerson (Jo Ann) of Signal Mountain, and Janet McLean (Buddy) of Knoxville.
She was preceded in death by her Parents, a brother, Reverend William S. Lea, and her husband. Surviving are 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Jo was a teacher in the Chattanooga school system, involved in all the activities of her school, her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and later, St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Signal Mountain. Past activities include the Full Gospel group in Chattanooga, various prayer groups in the city and volunteer work at Memorial Hospital. Josephine had a full and active life. A life that was based on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus was the source of her happiness and the rich legacy that she left for her children and grand-children.
We thank the staff of Arbor Terrace Assisted Living, Knoxville where she remained happy with a sense of humor as they kept her safe for the ten months of isolation during the current pandemic.
