John B. Erwin Jr., long-time resident of Hixson,TN, peacefully entered the gates of Glory on January 17th, 2020, in his home surrounded by his loving family. John retired from Dupont after 40 years as a supervisor then went on to continue as an electrician for an additional 10 years with PEC. He served his community and Delashmitt Road Baptist Church in deaconship for 65 years. John enjoyed spending his spare time working in the yard, golfing, or avidly cheering for the Tennessee Volunteers. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, John B. Erwin, III and also his parents John Bryant Erwin, Sr. and Sarah Crisp Erwin; as well as siblings: Doug Erwin, Pete Erwin, Marshall Erwin, Betty Erwin, Margret Monroe, Dorothy McGulluein, Edna Vaughn, Zella Ziegler, and Ruby Woodcock. He is survived by his devoted wife of seventy years, Estella Vistula Maddox Erwin; children Adonas Erwin Woolwine and Gary Taylor Erwin (Sonia); and daughter-in-law, Beverly Elkins Erwin. His favorite title of “Papaw” was given to him by his three grandchildren, Lindsay Marie Ashley (Matthew), Samantha Gabrielle Erwin, Meghan Nichole Erwin, and four great-grandchildren Makayla Love, Malachi Love, Bryson Love, and Charlotte Ashley. He is also survived by brothers Dean (Denise) Erwin and Merritt (Barbara) Erwin.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 19th from 2-5 pm and on Monday, January 20th from 4-8 pm at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, Hixson. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 2:00 pm officiated by Rev. Ronnie Smith.
