He was a graduate of Central High School and Edmondson’s Business School. He serviced in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. Joe was retired from Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a permanent member of the DuPont RIvermont Youth Recreation Association.
He served on the board of Catholic Charities, served on the parish council of St. Jude Church, the Friends Board of Notre Dame High School. He was active in the formation of the St. Jude School Athletic Association. He was active with the Boy Scouts. He served in many capacities with the DuPont RIvermont Youth Recreation Association, where a girls softball field was dedicated Fox Field in 1979. He was the first president of the G.I.R.L.S. softball program, past representative to the City of Chattanooga Recreation Advisory Board.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Lou Fox; son, Eddie Fox; daughter, Marie Meador; sister, Shelby Croft; and his parents, Oscar L and Sue M. Fox.
Joe is survived by his wife, Danielle Bedwell Campbell Fox; son, John T. Fox and wife Lisa; grandchildren, Justin and wife Nikita, Kara Martin and husband Seth, Shane and wife Misty, and Steven Meador; great grandchildren, Austin, Aubree, and Avery Meador, and Jack Martin.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 8, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm.
A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415 with Monsignor Al Humbrecht officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s name to Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation, 801 Dominican Dr., Nashville, TN 37228-1909 or St. Jude Children’s Research, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
