He was born in Chattanooga on April 27, 1930. He graduated from Chattanooga Central High School in 1948. He worked at Siskin Steel for two years before joining the Air Force. While in the Air Force he taught in the Air Force Tech Schools and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the military, he went to college at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute where he graduated with a degree in finance. He returned to Siskin Steel for 16 years and then joined Amusement Products where he became president and continued working until May 20, 2021.
He married Marjorie Allene Wiggins on June 14, 1959. They were married for 61 years.
During his whole life he served Christ. He was baptized at Chamberlain Avenue Baptist Church. After marriage he joined St. Elmo Methodist Church and several years later, in 1974 he and his family joined White Oak United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 47 years. He was also a member of the Highlander Class there where he served in several offices, and he served on the church administrative council for many years. For several years he was a member of the Toastmasters Thursday Thirty Club.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Richard Grant and Myrtle Chelette Grant, sisters, Lois Grant Greer and husband Eugene Greer, and Mary Elizabeth Grant, brothers, John William and wife Bobbie Sue Grant, Richard Jackson Grant, and Raymond Mark and Joyce Grant.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie Grant, daughter Betsy Grant of Monteagle, TN, sons Jay “Monty” Grant, Jr. and wife Melody of Ocala, FL, and David and wife Bobbie Grant of Spring City, TN and three grand-daughters Meredith, Ashley and Sophia Grant, sister Doris Anne Grant Deloach and husband David of Waco, TX, and brother-in-law Bill Wiggins and Molly Link of Aurora, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 11:00 AM, at White Oak United Methodist Church in Red Bank with Rev. Amy Nutt, Rev. Monty Grant, and Rev. David Grant officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hills Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, in Hixson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holston Home for Children, 404 Holston Drive, Greeneville, TN 37743, and the Siskin Children’s Institute, 1101 Carter Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
