He was born October 3, 1934 in Huntingdon, TN and graduated as valedictorian of Clarksburg High School in 1954. After moving to California for work, he was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1957, completing his basic training in Fort Hood, Texas and serving with the 4th Armored Division in Germany. Upon his retirement from Lance, Inc. as a branch manager in Memphis, he moved to Soddy-Daisy in 2001. He was a member of Falling Water Baptist Church where he taught the Men’s Bible Class for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Carrie Wilkes, and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Elda Rogers Wilkes, a son, Kevin Wilkes (Karman) of Hixson, a daughter, Karen Wilkes of Hendersonville, a bonus daughter, Rene’ Hampton (Randy) of Jackson, two grandchildren, Kacie Wilkes of Chattanooga and Konner Wilkes of Atlanta, GA, a brother, Jerry Wilkes (Joan) of Los Angeles, CA, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Falling Water Baptist Church at 523 Roberts Mill Road, Hixson, TN 37343 or Hospice of Chattanooga at 937 Blackford St., Chattanooga, TN 37403.
Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Highway 153. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 12:30 on Tuesday, June 9th, followed by the funeral service at 12:30. Burial will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. We would like to express our deepest appreciation for the love and support from family and friends during this most difficult time. Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, attendance at the National Cemetery is limited to 10 family members.
