Mr. James Paul Sartain Sr., 97, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018. Paul was born in Vanduser, Missouri on December 6, 1920 to Virgil Elder Sartain and Lucy Jean (Hughes) Sartain. He served throughout WWII (1940-1945 with the First Infantry Division, 18th Infantry Regiment. He participated in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star on D-Day.
Paul was a long-time member and deacon of Oakwood Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rachel Caroline (Ritta) Watters Sartain; and siblings, Jerome David Sartain, Leota Mae Sartain Cook, Mildred Pearl Sartain Carter, Lucy Jean Sartain Williams, and William Otto Sartain. Survivors include his daughter, Rachel Paulette Sartain Tawzer and husband, Michael Lynn (Mike) Tawzer; son, James Paul Sartain Jr. and wife, Linda Carol Landers Sartain; granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Tawzer Maestas and husband, James George Maestas; great granddaughters, Ella Marisol Maestas and Ruby Juliet Maestas; and several nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 5th from 4-7 pm at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel-Hixson. The funeral service will be on Friday at 10:00 am in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ken Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Oakwood Baptist Church.
