Retired Chaplain Major James N. Layne, 81, of Chattanooga passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years, having served in World War II and as Chaplain in the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
After retirement from the U.S. Army he taught at UTC and served as Chaplain of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Chapter of the FBI and Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. He was an ordained minister in the Church of God.
He was born in Cartwright, TN, son of the late Robert Ollie and Beatrice Cookston Layne. He was preceded in death by his grandson, David Roth, a brother, J.R. Layne and a sister, Javota Hickman.
Survivors are his wife, Lois D. Layne; daughter, Marcheta Roth of Milford, Michigan; son, Charles Layne; three grandsons, Jeffrey Roth, Michael Roth, Charles (Kourtney) Layne, a granddaughter, Carrie, a grandaughter-in-law, Jan Roth; two great grandchildren, Samantha Roth and David Layne; three sisters, Bobbie Moody, JoAnn Hanley, and Donna Creekmore and three brothers, LeBron Layne, Gary Layne and Jerry Layne.
Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Retired Chaplain Col. Richard Pace, Jeffrey Roth and Michael Roth officiating. Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at the North Chapel.
