June 3, 1937 – October 29, 2023
Homer Coleman Wilson left this life victoriously and went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on
October 29, 2023.
Homer lived a meaningful, joyous, and fulfilled life that can be a worthy example to us all. He was born June 3, 1937 in Woodville, Alabama, to parents Jesse Andrew and Elgie Estill (Hodges) Wilson. The sixth of six children, he grew up on the family farm, attending church and school in Woodville.
Following high school graduation in 1955, he moved to South Alabama to live with his brother and sister in law, where he began his service to his country as part of the 115th Air Control Squadron of the Alabama Air National Guard and became head mobility officer, retiring after 30 years with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
There he met his lifelong love, Myra Averett, and they married on February 7, 1959. They were baptized together three months later, on May 9. “Heirs together of the grace of life” here for 53 years; they were faithful, devoted believers and church members. He became a stalwart deacon and dependable repairman at Chattanooga Primitive Baptist Church, where they were actively involved from 1972 onward.
Homer and Myra began their family in Dothan, AL. In 1962, he joined IBM working approximately 10 years each in Tallahassee, FL, Chattanooga, TN and Tampa, FL where he worked as a skilled mainframe computer engineer and ultimately a CE manager. Homer was a life time learner, attending community colleges in the various places he lived. He received his MBA from Vanderbilt in 1981.
Upon retirement from both IBM and the Air National Guard in 1993, Homer and Myra relocated back to Chattanooga, TN. He continued to work part time with his son in law at CellularPage as a Human Resources Director. At this time, he also earned his contractor’s license and founded a family-based construction business where he worked for four years building houses and doing remodeling jobs until a life-threatening fall from a second-story roof in 1996. After Myra lovingly nursed him back to health, he had his turn to care for her from a cancer diagnosis in 2002 until her passing in 2012. They worked so well and so closely together in all things that it was said they functioned like a doctor/nurse partnership.
Among many memorable Homeric sayings are: “I’ve lived long enough to realize only two things really matter in life: God and family.” and “Every day is a good day, some are just better than others.” His strong faith, loyalty, work ethic, and vision were treasures to all who knew him. His precision was legendary, and he would want you to be aware that while Myra was born on the 29th and passed on the 3rd , he was born on the 3rd and passed on the 29th .
In the end he was blessed with a peaceful time of passing with family present, and he leaves behind children Carmen (Jim) Peace, David (Kelly), and Zach; five grandchildren Emily Peace (Matt) Cline, Jake and Kevin Wilson, Andrew (Megan) Peace, and Luke Wilson; great-grandsons Wilson Cline and Maddox Peace; and numerous other family members and dear friends.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 12:00 on Thursday, November 2nd at the North Chapel.
Services for Homer will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 2nd at the funeral home chapel with Elders Andrew Huffman and James Hindman officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Luke, Jake, and Kevin Wilson, Andrew Peace, Matt Cline, and Jake Mallette serving as pallbearers.
”Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”
