Grace Walker Travers, age 90, of Hixson, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011 in a local health care facility. She was born May 29, 1921 in Cochran, Georgia to the late Charles and Myrtle Walker. At the end of World War II, after the discharge from the Navy of her late husband, Thomas J. Travers, the couple moved to Brooklyn, New York. Following retirement they resided in Augusta, Georgia and upon the death of her husband, three years ago, Grace moved to Chattanooga.
Mrs. Travers worked as an English department secretary at Selden Middle School in New York for 17 years.
She was preceded in death by her son, Dennis Travers and sister, Hallie Jones.
Survivors include her son, Tom Travers and his wife, Robbie of Hixson; daughter, Judith Travers of Fort Salonga, New York; sister, Connie Walker of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Tommy Travers, Erin Travers, Kate Travers, and Alexa Gallo; one great-grandson, Nolan Travers.
A private graveside service will be held Thursday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Father Charlie Burton officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Caris Hospice and the staff of Morning Pointe of Hixson for their kindness and understanding while caring for their mother.
