She was born on May 5, 1917, in Schenectady, New York to the late Irene Thompson Hanlin and Hugh Carey Hanlin, Sr. Erin moved to Chattanooga when she was 6 years old. She attended Peabody College and taught grammar school for four years before marrying the late Edgar L. Jett. Erin was a member of Central Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School. She enjoyed working with the Mended Hearts and needlework especially needlepoint and reading. Erin was president of the Red Bank Lioness club, a member of the Kosmos Woman’s club and the Northside Study Club. She served on the board of Tennessee Federation of Women’s Clubs for 10 years.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Hugh Carey Hanlin, Jr. and Jean Hanlin Creswell.
Erin is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Dr. John P. Farr and her son, Edgar Hanlin Jett; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:30 pm on Tuesday, December 30, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A celebration of her life will follow at 3 pm on Tuesday at Chattanooga Memorial Park (Duck Pond) with Ministers John P. Smithson, III and Johnny Owens officiating.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be made in Erin’s name to Steve Smith for the widows and widowers fund at Central Church of Christ, 400 Vine Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
