Emma Pauline “Polly” Elkins, age 85 of Chattanooga went home to be with the Lord Sunday September 5, 2010. She was born April 28, 1925 in Stevenson, Alabama to the late Charles C. and Dossie J. Thornton.
She comes from a long southern distinguished democratic descent and will be greatly missed by family and friends. She was President of Cherokee Democratic Women’s Club, a member of the Greater Democratic Women’s Club, and the Hamilton County Democratic Party where she participated actively for many years.
Some of her many accomplishments were to work tirelessly to see that her daughter, grandchildren, and many others received a good education. She was a retired Guidance Counselor for Hixson High School and had taught Business at Kirkman High School. Mrs. Elkins was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and was very active with AARP. She was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include her daughter, Candace (Steve) Freeman of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Jason Jordan of Soddy Daisy and Brittany Freeman of Hixson; sister, Charlsie Lowery of Hixson; nephew, John (Penny) Terry of Sale Creek; nieces, Donna (Mike) Webb of Soddy Daisy; Rebecca Terry of Huntsville; great-niece and nephew, Kirby Webb and Trent Terry.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in the North Chapel. Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tennessee.
