Elizabeth “Betty” Dobbs Davis joined her precious husband, Pleasant Jack Davis, in heaven on August 27, 2023. Betty, a longtime resident of Chattanooga and recent resident of Knoxville, was 100 years old at the time of her death.
Betty was born on August 15, 1923, to Annie and Henry Dobbs, in Dayton, Tennessee. She was married to Pleasant Jack “PJ” Davis for 64 years before his death in 2011. A Hiwassee College alumna, Betty worked in personnel at TVA, American Lava, and 3M in Chattanooga, where she lived most of her adult life. Betty was an involved member of Red Bank Baptist Church in Chattanooga for almost 70 years. She moved to South High Senior Living in Knoxville in 2021.
Betty had a joy and zest for life that was infectious. Her sense of humor and quick laugh were a delight to her family and friends. She loved to travel with her beloved PJ, and they took many trips around the globe. Trips to China and Greece were among her favorites. Betty was an animal lover and, while never actually owning a cat, made sure to feed and name generations of strays that made her Chattanooga home their own. No cat went hungry on her watch! Only one of those cats was ever allowed inside her home. She was preceded in death by her favorite stray, Midnight, who had a special place in her heart after the death of her husband.
Betty is survived by her sister, Anna Laura Dobbs, her devoted niece, Judy (Wade) Boswell of Knoxville; great-nieces Laura Lumpkin-Tate (Stephen Tate), Kathleen (Mark) Miller of St. Louis, MO, and Mindy Post (Colin Sims) of Atlanta, GA; great-nephews Wade (Elaine) Boswell of Knoxville, Raymond (Shay) Boswell of Knoxville, and John (Ali) Post of Lilburn, GA; 16 great-great nieces and nephews, and three great-great-great nieces.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Pleasant Jack (PJ) Davis, parents Annie and Henry Dobbs; her sisters Louise McWilliams and Jane Lumpkin; brother Richard J. Dobbs; niece Susan B. Post; nephew Bobby Lumpkin; and great-nephew Robby Lumpkin.
The family greatly appreciates the staff at South High Senior Living for attentive and loving care for the past two years. Special thanks to Caris Hospice and Cornerstone Caregiving for their help in Betty’s final days. Miss Betty was loved.
A graveside service is planned for 10:30 am, Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Chattanooga Memorial Park, 501 Memorial Drive, Chattanooga, TN, 37415, with the Reverend Fred Steelman officiating.
