He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol Welch Martin, and by his daughters, Emily Martin and Jeanne Alley, his son-in-law Reggie Alley, and his grandchildren, Eleanor and Carter Alley. He was preceded in death by his brothers Louis and Earl Martin.
David always reflected that he was grateful for the doors of opportunity that opened for him. His education, which began at East Lake Elementary, culminated in graduation from Chattanooga High School and then the University of Chattanooga. He taught math at Chattanooga State and was a computer systems analyst at TVA, where he thoroughly enjoyed being part of the advancing field of computer science.
David gave much of his time and energy to First Baptist Church of Chattanooga, where he loved being a life deacon and Sunday School teacher in a moderate, progressive congregation, which encourages seeking God with both heart and mind.
In retirement he volunteered as a Tennessee Aquarium docent and found that his favorite place to speak was near the shark tank. He delighted in his family, who could always rely on his gentleness, kindness, and generosity.
David’s life will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, with visitation at 9:30am and funeral at 11:30am officiated by Dr. Thomas Quisenberry at First Baptist Church of Chattanooga 401 Gateway Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
