He was born in Cumberland, Maryland, and was a graduate of Mt. Savage High School in 1979. As a young adult, he served a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Los Angeles, and later served in the U.S. Army as an Atomic Demolition Munitions Specialist with the 62nd Engineer Company (honorably discharged, 1985).
David earned his diploma as a certified HVAC/R technician from Chattanooga State Community College in 1993, leading to his own successful HVAC business servicing residential and commercial units, notably at Parkridge Medical Center, for many years.
He was a faithful member of the Hixson Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the time of his death, he served as a high councilman for the Church in the greater Chattanooga area, overseeing local efforts to provide both addiction recovery services in the community and to fellowship widowed, divorced, and single adults. He was an avid Tennessee Volunteers fan and loved hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, and other outdoor activities. He thoroughly enjoyed cooking and providing meals for other people. He was well known for his overwhelming wisdom, generosity, kindness, and humor. David never met a stranger. His life was filled with selfless acts of Christian service, and his legacy and warm heart will forever be cherished and remembered.
David was predeceased by his father, Kenneth Cecil, and his youngest brother, Raymond Cecil.
He is survived by his mother, Virginia Cecil, his daughter, Jessica (Gregg) Fugunt and his grandson, Shepherd. He is also survived by his brothers, Kenneth, Douglas, Ronald (Ava), Daniel, Timothy (Tonya), and Bryant (Kimberly) Cecil, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 23, at the Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel in Hixson, TN, and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 3010 Hamill Road, Hixson, TN 37343, with services immediately following at 11:00 a.m., James Barrott officiating and President Jason J. Isaacson presiding.
Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson.
