Cindy was born on November 21, 1949 to Merlin Dean and Suzanne Martin Hurst in Centerville, Iowa. After graduating from Edgewater High School (Orlanda, FL) in 1967, Cindy went on to pursue a degree in Elementary Education at The University of Chattanooga. After college graduation, she married the love of her life on August 20, 1971. They spent several years abroad while he served in the U.S. Army. Cindy enjoyed taking care of their home, while also serving as a substitute teacher at the Hohenfels Army base in Germany. After moving back to the States, Cindy taught for a short period of time before deciding to stay at home with her two young children. She went on to serve a fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2013 after more than 18 years of service. After retiring, Cindy enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, and spending time with her grandchildren and their families. She also loved cheering on her and Jack’s favorite college football team– Alabama. Roll Tide!
Cindy was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Edward Bingham, her parents, and her sister, Marilyn Kay Hurst Umholtz. She is survived by her two daughters, Michelle B. Gates of Clayton, NC and Jackie (Carson) Orton of Beaufort, SC; six grandchildren; brother Richard (Mary) Hurst of Clanton, AL; sister Vicki Bryson (Bo) Eller of Chattanooga, TN; brother-in-law Robert Bingham of Bradenton Beach, FL; and multiple nieces & nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Chattanooga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Cindy requested memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital.
