Alfred James “A.J.” Smith, 90, of Hixson died Friday, August 02, 2019. He was born September 23, 1928 in Chattanooga to the late George and Grace Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Johnson Smith; daughters, Jill Marie Smith, and Connie Seal; son-in-law, Dicky Cantrell; and brother, Donald Smith.
He was a retired as a machinist from DuPont, where he was known as “Ajax”. Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and knife maker. He was a founding member of the Highland Sportsman Club, where he taught hunter safety for 30 years. He graduated from Central High School where he played football and baseball. He was a Golden Glove Boxer.
Survivors include his children, Jim Smith and Melody Cantrell; five grandchildren, Bryan Standefer, Stacey Sage, Brian Cantrell, Stem Cantrell, and Ahavti Swain; several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, August 6 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-7 Monday.
