Thomas “Tom” John McGinnis, age 59, of Highland, died Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Left to cherish his memory are his significant other, Vicky Stone; his six children: Jessica (Hanna) Kello, James McGinnis, Dominic (Katie Williams) Stone, David (Tara Ferrell) Stone, Jeremy (Sarah Rivitzer) Stone, and Angie (Denny) Alderman; his nine grandchildren: Conner James McGinnis, Cody Alderman, Kyla Baade, Alexis Stone, Robyn Alderman, Zane Stone, Ashlyn Stone, Tyson Stone, and Jocelyn Stone; his step-mother, Sandra McGinnis along with his siblings: Kathleen (Deb Miller) McGinnis, Michael (Jody) McGinnis, Pat (Tina) McGinnis, Cathy (Bob) Hicks, Dave (Mary) Milsk, Paul Milsk, Joan (Bob) Laho, Jim Milsk, Tom Milsk, Tim Milsk, and Sue (Bernie) Antonelli, Lynn (Mike) Borowski, David McDaniel; and many other extended family members and close friends.
Tom was born on May 24, 1961, in Chicago, the son of Mr. & Mrs. John and Mary (Monaghan) McGinnis. Tom worked at Oakland Air for thirteen years as the director of maintenance. Throughout his professional life, Tom was a valued member of the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, and was awarded the prestigious Golden Wrench award two times during his career for his accomplishments in the field of aviation. Tom retired from his position at Oakland Air this year.
In his free time, Tom enjoyed traveling, being outdoors, and going out on the boat. He was also an avid sports fan and held the Michigan State Spartans close to his heart. However, most of all, Tom loved to spend time with his family and friends; especially his grandchildren! Those who knew him will always remember him by his fun loving and charming personality. He was always the life of the party, and had a wonderful sense of humor. His smile could light up a room, and his laugh was contagious. The comradery of his circle of friends known as the "Founding Fathers" was dear to his heart, where Tom contributed to many chapters in this book of life. He will be greatly missed by many.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary McGinnis.
In accordance with Tom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home Highland Chapel, 3295 East Highland Road, Highland, Michigan 48356. Tom’s family will be present to receive guests at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Those desiring may consider memorial contributions in Tom's name to the American Heart Association or to the National Institute of Mental Health. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
