Dr. William J. Sabo, Jr., age 79, passed away peacefully at The Villages Hospice House, FL, on Thursday, March 31, 2016. He is survived by his seven children: Mike, of St. John, IN, Greg (Paula) of Beavercreek, OH, Tim of Los Angeles, CA, Monica (Bill) Figler of Jupiter, FL, Tom of St. John, IN, Jerry of Schererville, IN and Stephen (Jean) of Chicago, IL. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren: Alyssa, Abby, and Haley Sabo, Xander and Eric Figler, and Kyle, Sarah, and James Sabo; brother David (Mary) Sabo of Oak Brook, IL and sister Debbie (Dan) Amrhein of Highland, IN; many “favorite” nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives: Martha Machaj (1969), Joyce Miller (1991) and Linda Gates/Vandiver (2013); parents: William and Priscilla Sabo; sister Patricia Boback.
Bill was a proud graduate of Bishop Noll (1955), the University of Dayton, and Indiana University School of Medicine. He practiced Orthopedic Surgery for over 40 years in Northwest Indiana and Indianapolis. He was on staff at both St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, where he served as president of the medical staff and Community Hospital in Munster. He also worked at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis for 20 years. He was a veteran of the US Navy during the Vietnam era. Upon his retirement from medicine in 2014, he moved to The Villages, FL with his faithful German Shepherd, Holly. Bill was very proud of his Hungarian heritage, and loved to cook and entertain. He loved tending his orchard of fruit trees and growing crops on his farm in Franklin, IN and around his home in The Villages. He was also the author of a novel about the Indiana Territory in its very early days. His other hobby was creating and collecting artwork. He was a huge fan of Notre Dame Football and the Chicago White Sox.
Bill’s body was donated for medical research specializing in orthopedic studies, but friends are invited to meet with the family on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 2-8 PM at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN. On Monday, April 11, 2016 a memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 8308 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN at 10:00 AM with Fr. Joseph Vamos officiating. Wounded Warrior Project is a military and veterans charity service organization empowering injured veterans and their families.
