Walter Thomas Tice, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 3, 2011 at his home in Vass, NC. He was born on September 1, 1930 in High Point, North Carolina and was the son of the late Dr. Walter Thomas Tice Sr. and Bernice “Bunny” Keyser Tice.He leaves to cherish their memories,son Walter Thomas Tice, III and wife Mary Wagner Tice; daughter Beth Tice Breedlove; grandchildren Jennifer Breedlove Carroll and husband Brian R. Carroll; and Michael Breedlove.
Walt served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict spending 17 months in Korea. After his discharge, he returned to UNC-Chapel Hill earning a degree in business administration and spent 13 years with AT&T.Walt, with his wife Liz and children, moved to Oak Ridge, NC in 1969 where he joined Dockery Lumber & Realty Company as vice president and later as president of Tice Realty Company.
Walt loved his community of Oak Ridge, NC having served as President of the Oak Ridge Community Center and Oak Ridge Easter Horse Show. He was a founding member and past president of the Oak Ridge Swim Club. Walt worked in real estate and construction for many years before spending his retirement years in the Southern Pines area with special friend Charlene Sharpe. He enjoyed reading about history and politics and was the president of the Dialectic Senate while a student at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was an avid equestrian who will be missed by the many who loved him, but are comforted knowing he is once again atop his steed “Sherman” with the many animals he loved in tow.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 on the afternoon of January 7, 2011 at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery, 312 Montlieu Avenue in High Point, NC 27262. Family and friends may gather at the home of Liz Tice, 2022 Oak Ridge Rd. in Oak Ridge following the service.
