Raymond Lee Herndon, 82, a resident of Brighton Gardens in Winston Salem, died November 26, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of declining health. Raymond was born on November 12, 1929 in Guilford County and was a life-long resident of High Point, where he resided at 1501 Overbrook Court. Raymond was a 1948 graduate of High Point High School. Raymond enlisted in the United States Air Force upon the outbreak of the Korean War and served as the Sergeant for Squadron 3708, Flight 2443 at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Following his discharge from the service, Raymond continued his college studies and was awarded a Bachelor in Arts Degree from High Point College in 1954. Raymond married his sweetheart, Tommie Lou Young, in 1955, to whom he was married for 51 years. Raymond spent his entire career in various aspects of the furniture industry, initially serving as an executive of Youngs, Incorporated, and completed his career in the abrasives business with Alliance Abrasives. Raymond was a member of First United Methodist Church in High Point and the Hayes Bible Class.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Lou Young Herndon. He is survived by his two children, son, Brian Lee Herndon of Winston-Salem, and daughter, Cheryl Herndon Williams and her husband, Larry W. Williams, of Cary. Raymond is also survived by five grandchildren, Hunter Wells Herndon, Cameron Elisabeth Herndon and Catherine Laine Herndon, all of Winston-Salem, and Courtney Kristina Williams and Hayden Young Williams, of Cary.
A funeral service will be conducted at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point on November 29, 2011 at 2:00 pm, with Dr. Christopher Fitzgerald officiating. Internment will be at Floral Garden Memorial Park, High Point. Raymond’s family will receive family and friends from 12:30pm to 2:00 pm on November 29, 2011 immediately preceding the service. The family requests that memorials be directed to First United Methodist Church, 512 N. Main Street, High Point, NC 27260.
