Born in Queens, New York on November 29, 1929, raised in Buchanan and Covington, Virginia, and educated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute when it was a military school, he and his parents relocated to Detroit, Michigan where he met the woman he would later marry. He stood in life-long awe of God’s creation and, for a time, served as a forest ranger out West. Leslie and his wife and daughter moved to High Point in 1969.
Loved by all who knew him whether in the professional world or on the personal front, his positive attitude, big personality, and quick smile encouraged everyone with whom he interacted. He labored tirelessly for the furniture industry earning the respect of all who worked with him. Many colleagues tell of how Les always had time to mentor the new folks in the industry. He served others in countless ways, most notably through his efforts for the High Point Chamber of Commerce and SCORE.
Devoted to and beloved of his family, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gilda, his daughter, Linda, his three grandchildren, Caitlin, Daphne, and Wells, and great-grandson, Declan Wyett, his two brothers and sister.
A funeral service will be held at Sechrest Funeral Service in High Point Friday, January 15 at 1 PM preceded by a viewing and time to greet the family, 11 AM-1 PM. Interment will be for family only. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, The Cancer Center, and The Nature Conservancy.
