John began his working career at Beeson Hardware followed by Shackleford's Men's Store. He joined Kay Chemical in 1958 and retired July 10, 1992, having worked as Plant Manager and Shipping/Warehouse Manager. He was a strict, dedicated manager who was respected by employees as well as customers and suppliers.
Even though John worked many hours at his job, he found time to support and volunteer at various agencies and charities. He was an active member of the High Point Jaycees, Elk Lodge, and Junior Order (Mechanicsville Chapter, now the High Point Chapter). He gave many the gift of life through his participation in Red Cross Blood Drives. During his lifetime, John donated 121 pints of blood or 15 gallons. For each pint donated, the life of three people is saved or John unselfishly gave to 363 people. He was also a supporter of various Veterans organizations, the Boys Club, and he volunteered one day a week at the Victory Junction Gang Camp. John was also a former member of Colonial Country Club where he enjoyed a round of golf with his buddies.
