Jasper, whose nickname was “Jabo” was born in Caswell County, March 26, 1931, a son of the late Maryland and Melinda Watlington Mims. He briefly served in the U.S. Army. After his service, he married and settled in the District of Columbia where he and his wife, Jeroline Mims, raised their family of five children. He retired from Safeway Warehouse after many years of service as a body and paint mechanic. Jasper was preceded in death by two sons Jeffrey and Jasper, Jr., his wife, Jeroline and five siblings.
Left to cherish his memory are three daughters, Joyette Timpson, Jill Mims and Jeronda Hilton; a son, Joey Mims; grandchildren, Janard, Kamal, Jason, Gateece, Vanessa, Jailyn, Collin Jasper; two sisters, Rev. Flossie Mims Jackson and Malinda Mozell; and three great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Jasper’s life will be held Saturday, December 17, at 2 p.m. in the Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church (his family church) by Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service.
