J. D. was born in High Point, November 29, 1933, a son of the late Murphy and Leota Norman Starnes. He retired from the Lilly Company as Manager of the stain department, then was employed by NAPA, and most recently by Marloz of High Point. J. D. was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Starnes; a son, J. Dwight Starnes, Jr. and a brother, Sherman Starnes. He was a beloved lifelong member of Highland United Methodist Church. J. D. took on many leadership roles over the years, including chairman of the High Point District Missions Society, visiting the homebound, and serving as the church treasurer for fifty years. He also taught many in and out of Sunday School, and sang in the church choir. J. D. was a true servant leader and vital presence in his church. His spirit and smile will be greatly missed.
Surviving are a daughter, Sherry Sink and husband David; two sisters, Pat Bodenhamer and Frances Scarboro and husband Dunc; a brother, Carl Starnes; six grandchildren, Hope Brewer, Hannah Starnes, Stacy Sink, Josh Starnes, Britney Sink and April Martz; two great-grandchildren, Jaxon Brooks and Jorden Starnes; and a very special friend, Doris Blair.
A Celebration of J.D.’s life will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Highland United Methodist Church by Rev. Jeff Sypole. The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Highland United Methodist Church.
