Herb was born in High Point, NC on October 10, 1946. He spent his childhood in High Point and Richmond, VA, and later graduated from the University of Richmond. Herb’s early career was in both the coal and furniture industries, with stints in Richmond, VA; Lenoir, NC; New Orleans, LA; and Greenwich, CT.
In 1986, he co-founded the first of several successful businesses, B&H Panel Company, in Asheboro, NC. Herb was a passionate and driven entrepreneur and the inventor of several patents in the furniture industry. Outside of his businesses, Herb most enjoyed spending time with his friends and sons. He loved boating on Badin Lake, breeding Koi fish, attending Panthers and Hornets games, and raising a glass to life.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Lee Mitchell Jr and Betty Richardson Mitchell, and his sisters, Peggy Gould and Betty Lee Carden. He is survived by his two sons, Herbert Lee Mitchell IV (Caroline) and Gavin Mitchell (Mandi), as well as their caring and devoted mother, Deborah Mitchell. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Ari, Lincoln, Elle, and Millie.
An inurnment ceremony will be held on April 4, 2025 at 3:30 PM at the Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum, with a celebration of life reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the North Carolina Zoo Society.
