Hazel Newton Wright, 91, a resident of Providence Place, died July 19, 2014, at the Hospice Home of High Point. Hazel was born in Oxford, NC on December 30, 1922, the daughter of the late Hurley Lewis Newton, Sr. and Lula Hight Newton. Hazel graduated from Oxford High School in 1939. She was voted “Prettiest Girl” in the class. On June 1, 1939, she married Roscoe J. Wright, Sr., who predeceased her on June 30, 2003. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Hurley L. Newton, Jr. and Edward L. Newton, and by one sister Elizabeth N. Blackley.
Hazel and Roscoe moved to High Point in1961. They were members of Emerywood Baptist Church where they served faithfully. Together they enjoyed traveling with friends and watching ACC basketball and the Atlanta Braves. Hazel was a volunteer for Mobile Meals. She enjoyed playing bridge, making seasonal crafts, sewing, knitting, and making dolls. Hazel particularly enjoyed cooking wonderful meals for her family. She made special treats for family and friends for every holiday.
Hazel is survived by her son Roscoe J. (Rocky) Wright, Jr., and wife Lynda of High Point, and by her daughter Martha MacAninch and husband Andy of Lakeway, TX. She has four grandchildren: Melissa Warren and husband Greg of High Point, Matthew Wright and wife Jennifer of Winston Salem, Joshua Budwin and wife Meredith of Austin, TX, and Andrew Budwin of Christiansburg, VA. She has one step-grandson Brian McHenry and wife Detra of Winston Salem. Her great-grandchildren are Seth Cranford, Addie Cranford, Silas Cranford, Archer Cranford and Sophie Budwin. Her step-great-grandson is Nathan McHenry.
The funeral service will be held at Emerywood Baptist Church at 10:00AM on Tuesday July 22, 2014, officiated by Dr. Robert U. Ferguson, Jr. and Dr. Harold C. Warlick, Jr. After the service the family will receive friends in the Gathering Room. The graveside service will be at 2:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Henderson, NC. There will be a visitation at Sechrest Funeral Service at 1301 E. Lexington Avenue from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday evening, July 21.
