Hazel was born in Conover, December 12, 1925, a daughter of Ernest D. Smyre and Lucy Hefner Smyre. She graduated from High Point High School in 1942. Hazel spent more than 25 years with Copier Consultants of Greensboro in sales management. She really enjoyed her work there and won many performance based trips to the Caribbean. On June 30th, 1950, she married William Harding Cleary who preceded her in death in 2003. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Swanson Davis, a grandson, Daniel Ray Swanson and a brother, Hal D. Smyre. Hazel was a compassionate person who loved people. Her family came first and she loved cooking for them as she had excellent culinary skills. She loved doing things with her children and grandchildren. Hazel and her husband Bill enjoyed traveling, especially to the islands and beaches. Hazel had church affiliations with Deep River Friends Meeting and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her son, Wayne S. Swanson II of the home; a daughter, Wanda Cleary Gallman of Moncks Corner, SC; a sister, Evelyn S. Angel of High Point; grandchildren, Bill Davis (Elizabeth) of High Point, Lyle Davis (Karen) of Rolesville, Carol Swanson Allred (Robert) of Beaufort, SC, Jeff Swanson of Greensboro, Jack Wheatley (Tilly) of Camp Hill, PA, Michael Wheatley (Denise) of Atlanta, GA and Sherry Wheatley of Charleston, SC; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to Lenora Gordon for her compassionate care and love for Hazel over the past several years.
