Donal A. (Don) Mulligan passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Pennybyrn at Maryfield.
Don was born July 27, 1923, to Irish immigrants Anthony and Anna (Sullivan) Mulligan in Dorchester, MA. The family lived in St. Mark’s parish, then a largely Irish Catholic section of Boston. Don was one of eight children.
Don was a proud WWII Army veteran who saw active combat in the Pacific Theater operations in the Philippines. He graduated from Boston University with a business degree after the war on the GI Bill. He always said the GI Bill was one of the best things the US government has ever done for veterans.
He was a successful businessman, focusing on high end office furniture working with Harter Furniture Corporation for many years, then forming his own company DM Marketing from 1970-77. He spent the latter part of his career as VP of Marketing at Cartwright Furniture in High Point, NC.
Don married the love of his life, Terry Mulligan on September 22, 1956, and was married for 57 years until her death in 2013.
After retirement, Don was an avid golfer, scoring two holes in one! He was a volunteer at IHM Catholic Church and other activities, such as Meals on Wheels and driving patients to dialysis treatments. He was proud to be a Knight of Columbus at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic church(IHM).
Don had a wonderful 100th birthday celebration in July 2023 attended by his family, residents of Smith House at Pennybyrn, the president of the Knights of Columbus and others. The celebrations continued throughout the summer and included certificates from the state of NC and the White House, and an announcement in the Greensboro News and Record.
Don is survived by daughters Tammy Mulligan of Greensboro, Mary Ellen Liebal and husband Mike of Greensboro, sons Donal Mulligan and wife Diane of Minneapolis, MN, Neil Mulligan and wife Linda of Hillsborough, NC and eight grandchildren Kevin, Megan, Colleen, Erin, Katherine, Caroline, Daniel, and Caitlin. He was also excited about two great grandchildren on the way in 2024! Don loved and was immensely proud of his grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held at IHM church in High Point on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., with visitation from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m.
