Betty was born in Louisville, KY on February 15, 1934, the only child of Edwin and Frances Hepp. Betty fondly remembered her childhood and marveled at the love and devotion she received while growing up. She used these gifts well when raising her own family alongside her loving husband George (Les) Thornton whom she married on March 1, 1957. George proceeded Betty in death on March 23, 2017.
Married for 60 years, Les and Betty raised three daughters while exploring the country during several moves in support of Les’s career. Stops in Kentucky, North Carolina, Boston and Atlanta before finally retiring in 1994 and putting down roots to be closer to family in Greensboro.
Above all, Betty adored her family. Naturally outgoing, Betty loved playing cards, socializing with the Red Hat ladies, visits with her extended family and always making sure that no one never left the table hungry during the numerous holiday meals she prepared over the years.
Betty loved fashion and she wore it well! One of her great joys was shopping and she was always dressed perfectly for any occasion. She passed on her love of gardening and birds to her kids.
Betty was blessed to spend her final months with Sam Everett, who she met while living at The Stratford. Sam and Betty were quite the pair, and doting on each other, and brought great joy to each other's lives.
Left to cherish Betty’s memory are her three daughters, Sheryl Thornton (Fred Dingledy) of High Point, Donna Garland (Ronnie) of Summerville and Deb Delair (Rick) of High Point. Grandchildren Joe Fry (Lauren) of Kernersville, Madison Goldman-Rogers (Jake) of Richmond, CA and Daniel Goldman (Abby Mariman) of High Point. Great-grandchildren Kailan Fry Barron (Alex), Ethan and Lilly Fry and Asher and Oliver Goldman-Rogers.
Betty taught us to love each other above all things and to thank God for all of life's blessings. She lived life to the fullest and her handprint will forever be cemented in the lives of those she loved.
We are eternally grateful to Hospice of the Piedmont and Hospice Home in High Point for the loving care and support provided to Betty during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Piedmont or all Saints Episcopal Church in Jamestown, NC.
