Mr. Ben H. Martin, age 88, a resident of River Landing at Sandy Ridge and a former resident of Rockspring Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 23rd at High Point Regional Hospital.
Ben was born January 6, 1926 in Surry County a son of the late John W. and Alice Lora Cox Martin. He had been a resident of High Point most of his adult life and was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy, as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class. While in the Navy he attended college from Purdue University, sponsored by the Navy. An active member of The First Presbyterian Church in High Point, he served in many capacities including Church Deacon. Included among his many civic activities are Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross and others. He retired twenty two years ago from IBM Corporation and even in retirement would occasionally work part time for the company. He got a lot of enjoyment working on old cars and at one time had a personal collection.
Survivors include his wife of sixty five years, Sadie Draughn Martin of the home; nieces, Michaela Gabbard Cox, Charlene Gabbard Bowen, Betty Sue Allred, Donna Biggerstaff, Marsha Ellis, Bonnie Hardy; nephews, Nicholas Gabbard, Alex Gabbard, John Gabbard, James F. Draughn, Gray Draughn, Jeff Draughn, Ronnie Simpson; Several great-nieces and nephews and a special relative, Betty Hodges.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. Ken Broman-Fulks officiating. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm at Sechrest Funeral Service in High Point.
