Mrs. Fries was born September 27, 1921 in Thomasville to Cicero and Mary Lambeth Hill. She attended Davidson County schools as a young girl. During World War II she served her country, along with others of the "Greatest Generation", as a worker in the aircraft assembly plant at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore, Maryland. While working there, she met Ward M. Fries whom she married on May 23, 1944. Mrs. Fries worked in the hosiery and furniture industries in High Point and retired from the Stanton Cooper Furniture Company in 1992. She was featured in the book, “Hard Times Cotton Mill Girls” which told the story of women employed in the textile industry. She was a longtime member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church, now Life Community Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, five brothers, and her husband on November 13, 1998.
Surviving are her daughter; Deborah McDonald and husband Bob of Warrenton, Virginia. She is survived by many loving family members on both the Hill and Fries sides of the family including her sisters-in-law; Doris Shifflett and Vera Acker. She is also survived by a special "grandson", Hunter Scott, and wife Laura of Holmen, Wisconsin. Her family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to close friends, family, neighbors, volunteers and especially the care givers of Hospice of the Piedmont for the love and care shown to Anne. She so enjoyed the visits, food and reminiscing about her younger days.
She held special memories of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and the years shared at her husband's Bridgewater, Virginia home place, as well as the annual fall trip to Corolla, Outer Banks, NC. She spent many summers and partial winters at Debbie and Bob's home in Warrenton, Virginia and was always ready to travel with her Boston Terrier, Jake.
