Winnie Delma Stanley Hicks, 87, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at the Brian Center in Viewmont. Born May 12, 1925, in Johnson City, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Henry Clay Stanley and Texie Hattie Hughes Stanley. Winnie was a homemaker and attended Oxford Baptist Church in Conover. She was a former member of Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church (Avery County), where she had taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading, gardening, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Winnie was preceded in death by her husband, Odas Lee Hicks; son, Sonny Lee Hicks; brothers, S.F. Stanley and Ernest Hughes; and sisters, Wilma Stanley Williams and Willie Stanley Hughes.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Harold and Sandy Hicks, of Locust Grove, Va., Ricky Hicks, of Hickory, and Michael Hicks and fianc‚, Loretta, of Jersey City, N.J.; daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Dale Hedrick, of Claremont, Kathy and Hembree Davis, of Loris, S.C., Donna Smith, of Conover, and Cindy and Brad Garrett, of Hickory. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory. The Revs. Mike McKinney and Bobby Langston will officiate.
The family will receive friends following the service.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, in the Hicks family cemetery in Newland.
