William “Bill” Ted Dellinger of Hickory, NC passed away on January 14, 2021, at the age of 96. After several years of declining health, Bill died peacefully at the NC State Veterans home in Black Mountain.
Bill was born in Hickory on August 19, 1924, to Archibald Teddy Dellinger and Bertha May Dellinger. The second oldest of seven children, Bill graduated from Hickory High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941. He served during World War II and the Korean War. He received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered at Normandy, France in 1944.
After leaving the military, he met the love of his life Lila Colleen Painter. They married in 1954. He worked for P&G Chair Company, retiring as superintendent after 30 years of service. He was a charter member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Hickory.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Colleen Painter Dellinger, and siblings Mary Dellinger Wright, Jane Dellinger McMillan, Kathleen Dellinger Propst, Millie Dellinger Rockett, Robert Dellinger, and Jerry Dellinger.
He is survived by sons Gary Dellinger and wife Jana of Hickory, Stephen Dellinger and wife Deborah of Columbia, SC; grandchildren Matthew Dellinger of Lexington, SC, Laura Montgomery of Lexington, SC, Ashton Dellinger of Nashville, TN, Graham McIntosh of Hickory, Jack McIntosh of Hickory; and great-granddaughters Brooke Dellinger, Audrey Dellinger, Eva Dellinger, Lila Montgomery, and Dot Montgomery.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
