Sherman Oliver Cook

Sherman Oliver Cook, age 86, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born November 7, 1928, in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Oliver Lenoir Cook and Ella Mae Morris Cook. He retired after 34 years of service with the Hickory Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, Sherman was preceded in death by his sister, Artimae Turner; and brother, Fred Cook.

Survivors left to cherish his memory is his wife of 64 years, Bonnie Clark Cook; daughter, Yvonne Starnes and husband, Larry; son, Sherman Lee Cook and wife Betsy; grandchildren, Katie Moore, David Oliver Cook and fiancée, Cara, and Derek Starnes and wife Hollie; step grandchildren, Todd Starnes and wife Miriam, and Dana Starnes Gibson and husband Allen; great grandchildren, Aiden Moore, Ava Moore, and Braxton Oliver Cook; step great grandchildren, Lauren and Grant Starnes and Chance and Gracie Benfield; sisters, Carolyn Craig; Almeta Short and brother, Wilson Cook, and his four legged babies, Lady and Daisy.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2015 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory with Pastor Boyd Biggerstaff officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Salvation Army, Resource Development, PO Box 241808, Charlotte, NC 28224-1808.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be retirees of the Fire Department.
