SARA WEBB YOUNG NEWTON – Passed away peacefully at Catawba Valley Medical Center, surrounded by her family, Wednesday, March 1, 2017. Sara was born on June 14, 1947 in Catawba County. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Frederick Webb and Charlotte Starnes Webb of Hickory. Educated at Hickory High School and a 1969 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, with a degree in sociology, she retired after working for the NC Department of Social Services in both Caldwell and Catawba Counties as a Specialist in the Intake division and Child Protection Services. Sara was a life time member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church where she served on numerous committees, including playing the piano and teaching Sunday School in the children’s department and she also sang in the choir. She enjoyed visiting shut-ins and those in the hospital. Sara was known for her kind, compassionate spirit. She loved her family, step-children, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and found great joy in giving them gifts, sending cards and spending time with them. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Elmer Edward Young, a sister and brother-in-law, Josephine Miller and husband Frank, brother-in-laws Hubert Lawson and Jay Brewer. Survivors include her step-children, Michael Edward Young and wife Susan of Conover, David Ray Young and wife Tina of Newton and Timothy Lee Young and wife Stephanie of Hickory: sister, Jane Mosteller and husband Kelly of Bethlehem: sister-in-laws Louise Lawson of La Follette, TN, Betty Brewer of Speedwell, TN and Barbara Lunsford and husband Johnny of Newton: step grandchildren, Mike, Tyler, Ross, Vanessa, Breanna, Dylan, Luke, and Peyton Young: nieces Emily Pruette and husband Paul of Hickory, Katie Arndt and husband Kelvin of Conover, Robin Long and husband Carlos of Speedwell, TN, Sue Carroll of La Follette TN, Shelby Bollinger of La Follette TN: Nephews Robert Mosteller and wife Heather and Jonathan Mosteller and wife Laura of Bethlehem; Jason Lunsford of Newton; great nieces and nephews Madeline, Andrew, Parker, Isaac, Rylan, Wyatt, Dylan, Alex, and Tre; aunts Lorraine Starnes of Charlotte and Jane Webb of Hickory; also many cousins. Funeral services will be held at St. Andrews Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 4th at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor W. Richard Fritz, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. at the church. The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses who took such wonderful care of Sara through her last days on the Oncology floor at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
