There was much rejoicing in heaven on Sunday, August 23, 2015, as our beloved Robert “Jerry” Gerald Kanipe moved to his Father’s House. Born June 26, 1931, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Robert Colon and Nannie Frye Kanipe. He was retired from the City of Hickory as the assistant street superintendent and was a very faithful member of his beloved church, New Hope Baptist in Hickory. Surviving him are his four godchildren, Debbie Setzer Denton and husband Phil Denton of Greensboro, Robert “Rick” Setzer of Hickory, Lisa Setzer Doucette and husband Dean Doucette of Hickory, and Lynn Setzer Parlier and husband Jeff Parlier of Knoxville, Tennessee, and their children Adam Doucette, Jordan Doucette, Aaron Parlier and Benjamin Parlier.
He is also survived by one sister, Nancy Kanipe Smithey, her husband Cecil Smithey, four nephews Chris Smithey and wife Angie, Craig Smithey and wife Tina, Curt Smithey and wife Susan, and Cory Smithey and wife Heather, and three nieces Rene Meredith, Darlene Phillips, and Tami Defenderfer.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine Teague Kanipe, goddaughter Kennette Teague Dotson, and his sister Drucilla Herman.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 26, from 5 to 6 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. A Celebration of his Life will follow at 6 p.m. The Rev. David Daly and Dr. Dale Watts will be conducting the service. Pall Bearers will be Adam Doucette, Jordan Doucette, Aaron Parlier, Benjamin Parlier, Chris Smithey, Craig Smithey, Curt Smithey, and Cory Smithey. Honorary pallbearers will be the Gatekeepers Sunday School class. The family requests all memorials be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 410 26th Avenue NE, Hickory, NC, 28601. Hickory Funeral Home is serving the family.
