Heaven gained another angel on April 9, 2025, when Michael Wade Propst passed away peacefully. Born and raised in Catawba County, Michael remained a lifelong resident, deeply rooted in the community he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Lee Propst and Elizabeth “Libby” Cutting Propst. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 60 years, Gloria Troutman Propst. The couple joyfully celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 9, 2024.
Michael is also survived by his two sons, Michael Propst of Hickory, and Lee Propst and his wife Tammy of Apex, NC; and by his beloved granddaughters, Brianna McGhee of Willow Spring, NC, and Ashlee Propst of Philadelphia, PA. He is fondly remembered by his sister, Jenny Propst Lail and her husband Gary, as well as five nieces and a nephew.
During the 1990s, Michael found great joy and excitement working in NASCAR, where he had the unique opportunity to travel the country as part of the racing circuit. He worked closely with legendary drivers like Kyle Petty and Jeff Gordon, driving the show car and participating in numerous autograph sessions with fans. He was often present behind the scenes during commercial shoots and other promotional events, always with a smile and a story to share.
His time in NASCAR was filled with adventure, camaraderie, and countless miles on the road—memories he cherished deeply and shared often. Michael formed many lifelong friendships within the NASCAR community, bonds that have endured through the years and stand as a testament to his warm heart, quick wit, and genuine love for people.
A funeral service honoring Michael’s life will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Hickory Funeral Home. Receiving will be from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., with the service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Deacon Deborah Johnson officiating.
