HICKORY— Ira David Miller III, 75, of Hickory passed away peacefully, following an extended illness, at Carolina Rehab Center of Burke, on Sunday October 1, 2017. Born in Long Island, New York on July 31, 1942, he was the son of the late Ira David Miller Jr. and Mildred Bertha Coke Miller. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Diane Buck Miller. Raised in Florida, Mr. Miller served in the Navy and later graduated from Georgia Tech with an engineering degree. Prior to founding Carolina Truck Service, which he ran for 35 years, Miller worked at Cape Canaveral. Ira was a skilled woodworker and craftsman. One of his greatest joys was building bird houses, cars and trucks which he enjoyed giving as gifts to children.He was a caring and friendly person who loved the Lord. He enjoyed sharing the power of this love with others and in doing so he spent time volunteering as a prison Chaplain. He was also actively involved with Gideon’s International for many years. Ira is survived by his daughters Michelle Miller and Lynn Miller Borland, both of South Carolina; special friend Joan Shook and family of Hickory; a brother Bob Miller and wife Cheryle of Hickory; four grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him. A faithful member of Miller’s Lutheran Church, a service of remembrance will be held at the church Wednesday, October 4th at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Marty Ramey officiating.
