George was born September 10, 1930 in Carroll County, Mississippi to the late George Robert Thompson Sr. and Sadie Osborne Thompson.
George was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church.
George was a Master Sgt serving in the Mississippi National Guard and was deployed to Korea in 1951 for 13 months with the US Army. He retired in 1995 from Hickory Manufacturing Company after 42 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, married for 59 years, Mary Ruth Isenhour Thompson of the home, a son, Larry Thompson and wife Janice of Lexington, NC, a daughter Sherry Cogdell of Conover, special granddaughter, April Cogdell and boyfriend Justin Cash of Conover, step granddaughter Kelly Parker and husband Dennis of Concord, three step-great grandsons, Braxton, Caden and Brock Parker all of Concord, sisters Sarah “Polly” Adcock of Durant, MS, Grace Winstead of Yazoo City MS, brother Chester Eugene Thompson and wife Rose of Durant, MS, sister in law Carrie Sigmon of Conover, brother in law Paul Isenhour and wife Vivian of Hickory, special niece Dr. Donna West of Dothan AL, special nephew Greg Adcock of Durant MS and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 10,2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hickory Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 11 , 2012, at 2:00 PM at St Peters Lutheran Church with the Reverend Paul Birner and Reverend Matthew Schilling officiating. The body will be placed in the church from 1:00 until 1:45 PM prior to the service.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Military graveside honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #48.
