Newton – Ernestine Miller Hunsucker Reid, 98, of Newton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 26, 2022 at Abernethy Laurels.
Born on April 10, 1924 in Catawba County, NC she was the daughter of the late Jonas Franklin and Vertia Vernell Simmons Hunsucker.
In addition to her parents, Ernestine is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Steele Jones Reid; 2 sons, Reginald Baron Reid and Andrew Lee Reid; a brother, Jonas Theobold Hunsucker; 4 sisters, Alvena Hunsucker Deal, Freda Hunsucker Regan, Frankie Hunsucker Bowman, and Edith Hunsucker Gantt.
Those left to cherish her memory include, a son, Samuel Reid and his wife Julie; a sister-in-law, Betty Reid; many cousins, nieces, and nephews, including a niece, Terra West, who was close to her until the last day.
Ernestine was a faithful member of West Hickory Baptist Church. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Newton-Conover High School, and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, receiving a degree as a Registered Nurse. She practiced as a nurse for over 40 years in various positions.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Catawba Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Terry Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Hickory Baptist Church in Ernestine’s name.
