HICKORY – Clemmie Thomas Self, 91, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Mr. Self was born December 18, 1922 in Cleveland County to the late Pink Lee and Mandy Ledford Self. Mr. Self served in the US Navy during WWII; he was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, where he was a choir member, Deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He would make tapes and deliver to those not able to attend church. After retirement from Shuford Mills Tape division he enjoyed fishing and being a mall walker. Mr. Self was given an award from Gov. Jim Hunt for his charitable work. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Hugh Self and George Self; his sisters Dessie Johnson and Estelle Canipe. Surviving are his wife of 62 years Doris Self of the home; his daughters Marie Gambrell and husband Danny of Greer, SC and Amy Self and husband Louis Zitnik of Hilo, Hawaii; a grandson Scott Gambrell and wife Raven of Columbia, SC; a granddaughter Carrie Gambrell of Greer, SC; great-grandson Jake Gambrell of Columbia, SC ; a great-granddaughter Sally Gambrell of Columbia, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to say a special thank you to Johnny Hughey and Harvey Killian for all they have done to help the family. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Hickory Funeral Home from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM.The funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 2:00pm at Woodlawn Baptist Church with Reverend Charles Ledford and Dr. Ed Yount officiating. Pallbearers will be his nephews. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
