Hattie Gold, eldest daughter of Russ and Daughters appetizing business, died Apr 17 at 101 years. Hattie was the beloved daughter of Joel Russ and Bella Speier Russ, immigrants from Galicia, Austro-Hungary who founded the store, now in its 4th generation in the Lower East Side and immortalized in the book, “Russ & Daughters: The House that Herring Built.”
Hattie’s beloved husband of 57 years, Morris “Murray” Gold, died in 1992. The couple were affectionately nicknamed the “Lovebirds,”in retirement in Bal Harbor, FL where they sung for neighbors and local shows. Hattie was also an active leader in local Democratic politics, Hadassah and Women’s ORT.
After Murray’s death, Hattie moved to Pembroke Pines, FL to be near sisters Ida & Ann. Upon her 90th birthday Hattie was featured at a New York Jewish Museum sold-out evening with “3 generations of Russ & Daughters.” She was also interviewed for the PBS film “Jews of New York,” and this year’s, “The Sturgeon Queens.”
Hattie’s beloved daughter Nina died in 2009 and sister, Ida Russ Schwartz, in 1999. She is survived by sister, Ann Federman; son, Paul Gold; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
