William Thomas Mitchell, age 59, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Tommy was born on June 18, 1963, at St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, New York to Bill and Isabella Mitchell. Tommy began his education in the White Plains School district until his family moved to the city of Mt Vernon, New York in 1974. He attended Grimes Elementary and Sacred Heart Elementary schools in Mt. Vernon. Tommy developed his passion for the game of basketball as a young boy playing at the Y.M.C.A., Boys' Club of America and local Mt. Vernon parks as well as other basketball teams including the N.Y.C. Riverside Hawks.
In 1981, Tommy graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. He received his associate degree from Westchester Community College (WCC), where he also played college basketball. It is there, where “Mitch" evolved as a player and leader. In 1993 a former coach, Rollie Massamino, recognized Mitch's talent and invited him to be an assistant coach at The University of Nevada Las Vegas. It was that invitation that brought Mitch to the city of Las Vegas. Mitch was enticed and delighted to make a new life.
Mitch created his own training program to develop basketball skills called Mad Moves Inc. The program's mission was to develop and enhance players' basic basketball skills. Mitch worked extremely hard, training many players during early morning private sessions and coaching youth teams. Mitch encouraged and motivated players to be their best on and off court.
In 2002, Mitch met his beloved wife Mirianna, aka "Brenda." They were married in front of family and friends in 2006. Even as a family man, Mitch, continued to train, inspire, and share his passion for the game of basketball with all who inquired.
William "Mitch" Mitchell is survived by his wife of 17 years, Brenda; father, Bill C. Mitchell; brother, Anthony (Jackie); sister, Diane; in-laws: Yvan and Allen Teamotuaitau; sister in-laws: Fareura (Roger) Toromona and Vahineura Teamotuaitau; nephews: Anthony, Tsekou, and Mychael; niece, Nycole; grand-nieces: Kendell and Kaelin; and grand-nephew, Kacen. Mitch was predeceased by his mother, Isabella Mitchell.
Mitch is loved by a whole host of cousins: The Mitchells and Singletons as well as his Mt. Vernon and Las Vegas family & friends.
A visitation for William will be held Friday, June 16, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Funeral services will begin at 12:00 PM both at at Palm Boulder Highway Mortuary, 800 South Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV 89015. William will be laid to rest at Palm Henderson Cemetery.
