Orville was born on February 4, 1941 in Bakersfield, California. In 1950, at the age of 9, Orville move to Casitas Springs where he attended Oak View School, and later Cabrillo Junior High. As a teen, Orville attended Ventura High School where he graduated in 1958. During his high school years he played trumpet in the school band, and for the remainder of his life had fond memories of his school years, and endless Cougar pride. Orville attended many class reunions, and was an active Ventura High School alumnus.
After graduation, Orville enlisted in the United States Army in 1958, and was stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1962. Orville made many friends in the service, and enjoyed serving his country.
Orville's faith was central in his life, and he was always active in his church. From singing in the choir at First Baptist Church of Ventura, to participating in weekly bible studies at Warm Spring Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Orville's relationship with God and his deeply held beliefs and convictions prompted him to become an amazing husband, father, friend and man.
Orville also found satisfaction in his work and his career. Starting as a surveyor, Orville eventually found a position within County of Ventura Public Works Department which he retired from in 1999. Throughout his career, Orville touched many people both in the workplace and in the public with his humor, compassion, and caring.
Orville is survived by Patty, his wife of 47 years, son Jamie Smith, and daughter Vickie Cornell, along with three grandchildren, Kyle Cornell, Nicholas Smith, and Jacob Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents Josephine and Orville Ray Smith Sr, and his infant son Stephen Patrick Smith.
Orville was greatly loved and will be truly missed by all who knew him. His caring and concern for others touched many in his life, and his desire for others to find happiness and success made his life truly meaningful.
Donations in Orville's honor may be made to Comprehensive Cancer Center in Las Vegas, NV or Odyssey Hospice Care also in Las Vegas.
