Katherine Mary Pascoe died on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at 6:11pm at St Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson, Nevada. She was buried on Friday, December 01, 2023 at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
Katherine was 87 years of age.
Katherine was born and raised in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn, New York. At age 19 she married 21 year old Francis William Pascoe, also of Sunset Park. In 1955 they were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church on 60st-5th ave in Brooklyn. They would remain married for 68yrs until her death in 2023. Katherine's maiden name is Katherine Mary Duane and she was one of 10 children which included a mix of biological and step-siblings. Her husband Francis, aka Frank Sr served in the United States Army and is the oldest of 13 siblings.
During her early working years Katherine was employed at a firm on Wall St in Manhattan and worked as a secretary, while Frank Sr worked on the Brooklyn waterfront as a dock worker. Over the course of their marriage they raised 3 children; Frank Jr, Ronald and Andrew. Katherine's favorite entertainer was Johnny Mathis, her favorite occasional drink was Pina Colada, and her Catholic devotion for intercession was to Saint Jude (Thaddeus).
In 1972, Katherine, her husband Frank Sr and their 3 children relocated to reside in Edison, NJ. After living several decades in Edison, Katherine and Frank Sr then relocated to live in Las Vegas, NV, in 1986.
At age 54 Katherine suffered a debilitating stroke which required emergency hospitalization. While being treated in the hospital, the doctors said there was a chance that she might not live another week. Katherine, being a descendant of Irish lineage and an extremely stubborn woman who refused to give up, surprised the doctors by her recovery and was eventually discharged from the hospital. Unfortunately, her stroke resulted in her having limited mobility and an inability to speak coherently. Over the next 33 years Katherine would live a productive life as a person with a disability. She was supported daily by her husband Frank Sr accompanied by the support and direct involvement of her immediate family members.
Katherine will be remembered as a loving mother who was always active and present in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Her cackling laughter was contagious. She was always smiling and laughing and always left you with the impression that her disability was not an obstacle to living life.
Of course, our family and friends can share a lifetime of individual fond memories with mom. She was quite the character. One comical reflection that comes to mind was when she would rise out of her wheelchair to dance to music. Mom would stand on her one functional leg while holding onto her cane with her one functional hand and then begin to shake her butt while simultaneously displaying a big exaggerated seductive smile on her face. Other reflections worth a chuckle are to recall her seated at the slot machines in her favorite local casino and using her one and only functional hand/arm to pull the lever, or listening to her loud and excited shouting at the television set to cheer her favorite football teams on to victory, or hearing her repeatedly raising her voice to the tv set shouting, "Cmon, Cmon, Cmon!" as she rooted for her horse to win as it approached the finish line at the NYC track...of course the common theme here, and let's be honest, mom loved to bet! Interestingly, you would get the impression that she won more of her bets than she lost... I don't think so!
Katherine was blessed with dying a peaceful death in the hospital. Hooked up to life support tubes, her bedside was surrounded at her last moment of breath by her husband Frank Sr, her son Frank Jr and his wife Gwendolyn-Lou, her grandchildren Sean, Christopher and Aubrey and their spouses; Azita, Jennifer and Joey. While in her hospital bed and only hours before her death she received the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, sacramentum exeuntium, by Roman Catholic Priest, Father Jacob Knee. Her salvation is assured and she was not in pain at the moment of her death. Katherine is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and was welcomed into eternal life in her glorified new body. No more pain, no more suffering, no more meds, no more wheelchair. Mom died an absolutely wonderful death and we will see her again.
And when we see her next time, I know she will be smiling, laughing and RUNNING to greet us...and she'll probably have a parlay card in her hand and tell us she's been waiting for us and then asking, "What took ya so long to get here." What a reunion it will be!
Way to go Catty! ...Way to go G Ma!... Way to go Gram!.. Way to go Teflon Don!..Get some rest lady, ya know we love ya ma!
