May 30, 1920 - July 13, 2012
Gloria Irwin was born in Dodson, Louisiana to Onus and Beulah Jarvis Moffett. They later lived in the small towns of Fisher County, Texas. She was raised with her 6 brothers (Raymond Lee, Chester, Onus, John Jefferson, Hoy and Charles), and 2 sisters (Carrie Maxine Cambell and Joyce Villalobos). As a child growing up during the Great Depression, Gloria knew poverty and learned the value of hard work and inner strength. At times she picked cotton, and the gift of an orange at Christmas was a delight. Gloria completed nurses training at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Although she devoted her life to being a wife and mother, Gloria was very proud of her nurses training and always identified herself as a Registered Nurse. After her training, Gloria was married and had four children, Lou Lane, Gloanna, Stephen and Lilia.
Gloria met and married her second husband, Mark Irwin when she later moved to San Diego. Mark was a photographer for General Dynamics, and the family lived for two years in Cocoa Beach, Florida, before buying a home in San Diego. Gloria's greatest accomplishment was in the raising of her four children. She taught them the value of a good education and hard work. She brought them up in the Methodist Church, and they went to church and Sunday school every week. She also taught her children, by example, to be organized and thrifty, and taught her eldest daughters how to cook and sew. She was an excellent seamstress and would make her own clothing for herself and her family. Gloria was also very talented at gardening. When her children were small, she planted peach and plum trees in the back yard, and made delicious jams and jellies. She grew many vegetables, green beans and tomatoes. In her later years, she took much pride in her garden, growing, harvesting, and sharing the fruits of her labors.
Gloria lived in her house on Malta Street until the age of 91. She was fierceley independent. Even when her mind was stronger than her body, she could be found outside, hunched over pulling up weeds, or hauling buckets of collected rain water to water her plants. She was not one to waste anything. Gloria maintained her strength and faith until the end. She spent her last six months in Las Vegas, Nevada, close to her grandaughter and great-grandchildren. Per her wishes, her remains will be enterred at Sylvester Cemetary in Fisher County, Texas, next to her husband Mark Irwin at the Moffett family plot. Memorial Service to be held July 24 at 2pm at St. Mark's Church in San Diego.
Gloria Irwin is survived by her sister Carrie. Her three children: Gloanna ('Glo' or 'Marty'); Stephen and wife Ginger; and Lilia. Her eldest daughter Lou Lane is now deceased. Grandchildren are Gary, Alan and Rachel . She has three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements under the direction of Palm Boulder Highway Mortuary, Henderson, NV.
