Baltazar Manolo Quilon Espinueva, affectionately known as Manoling or Manny, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2024, at the age of 81, with his devoted wife by his side. Born on January 6, 1943, in Bacnotan, La Union, Philippines, Baltazar was one of eight siblings: Larry, Nancy, Carmen, Lily, Joey, Mike, and Augusto.
From humble beginnings, Baltazar’s life was shaped by resilience, determination, and an enduring love for family. After his father’s passing, Baltazar and his siblings lived with extended family, an experience that strengthened his appreciation for family bonds and instilled in him a deep drive to build a stable, independent future.
Despite financial hardships, Baltazar pursued engineering studies at Feati University in Manila, completing three years of college before being forced to pause his education. In 1971, while working at the University of the Philippines, Baltazar met Rosenda, the woman who would become the love of his life. Their relationship blossomed as they shared dreams of a brighter future.
With the unwavering support of his mother and his older brother Larry, who was serving in the U.S. Navy, Baltazar immigrated to the United States in June 1977. A couple of years later, on August 20, 1977, he and Rosenda were married, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love, faith, and shared values. Together, Baltazar and Rosenda built a life dedicated to their family and dreams. They raised three children: Valerie (b. September 3, 1980), Venetia (b. August 12, 1981), and Richard (b. April 26, 1984); and celebrated Baltazar’s proudest milestone of becoming a U.S. citizen on August 9, 1984.
To support his family and build a strong foundation, Baltazar worked tirelessly, often holding two jobs intermittently to provide for his loved ones and secure a better future. His dedication and charisma led to a long career as a bartender, where he became known for his warm personality and ability to connect with people. His exceptional work ethic and charm caught the attention of Steve Wynn, who personally invited Baltazar to join Treasure Island, a highlight of his professional journey. After decades of serving others with warmth and a welcoming smile, Baltazar retired in 2007 to focus on his family and other ventures.
A natural entrepreneur, Baltazar and Rosenda opened Balrose Filipino Market in 1991, a thriving family business they successfully ran until 2006. In retirement, Baltazar fulfilled a lifelong dream of building a home in San Pablo, Laguna, Philippines, completed in 2006. He later began constructing the Balrose Commercial Centre in San Fernando in 2012 and built a second home there in 2021, which became his primary residence.
Baltazar never forgot his humble beginnings. Having received the support of his mother and brother to start a new life in the United States, he made it his mission to pay that kindness forward. Baltazar helped family members in the Philippines and the United States achieve their dreams, whether by paying for their tuition, welcoming them into his home until they could get on their feet, or offering guidance and encouragement. His generosity and devotion left an indelible impact on everyone he touched.
Baltazar lived life with a vibrant spirit and a big heart. An extrovert by nature, he found joy in family gatherings, long walks, curating fine alcohol for his bar, and watching movies. A former boxer, his love of sports stayed with him throughout his life. Introduced to Catholicism by Rosenda, Baltazar became a devoted leader of the rosary, finding great comfort and purpose in his faith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Rosenda Espinueva; his children, Valerie Snyder, Venetia Espinueva, and Richard Espinueva; and his cherished grandchildren, Ayden and Noa Snyder, and Brian, Caiden, and Daven Espinueva. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings and countless extended family members and friends who were touched by his warmth, humor, and generosity.
Baltazar’s journey from his modest beginnings in the Philippines to his successes in the United States and beyond, stands as a testament to perseverance, faith, and love. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family while creating opportunities for the next generation. His legacy of hard work and devotion will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
