Nathan Howard was born on August 24, 1921, in Gainesville, Texas. One of nine children born to Johnnie Howard and Addie Mae Dillard Howard, Nathan grew up in Oklahoma. He has two surviving brothers, T.C. W. Howard and Theopolus (Ike) Howard.
Nathan served in the army starting in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1943. In 1946 he moved to California, where he met his future wife, Betty Lucas. They were married at their home in Los Angeles in 1959 and Nathan became the proud father to Betty's daughters Dorrena and Annena. Nathan and Betty welcomed a daughter, Felicia, in 1960.
For 15 years Nathan worked as a presser for Frank Lee Women's Clothing Company. Following his career as a presser, he worked as a security guard for the county of Los Angeles for six years.
While living in Los Angeles Nathan was actively involved in church and was a member at St. Paul Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. After moving to Lake Elsinore, California, in 1984 he became an active member of Independent Church of Lake Elsinore, where he taught Sunday school, served as a Deacon and Trustee, and also sang in the choir.
By the 1980's, Nathan and Betty became members of the 21st Century Travel Club and traveled to many destinations. Nathan's favorite trips were the cruises that took them to the Caribbean Islands.
A devoted host and entertainer, Nathan always opened his home to his family and friends. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, bowling, and loved listening to jazz.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Howard, two brothers T.C. W. Howard and Theopolus (Ike) Howard, three daughters, Dorrena Hobbs, Annena Herndon and Felicia Flournoy, six grandchildren, Neysha Laskey, Nichelle Hobbs, Curtis Hobbs III, Jessica Herndon, Danyelle Mitchell, and Damon Flournoy, 26 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
